Words of Comfort in the Bible for Your Hard Time

Words of Comfort in the Bible for Your Hard Time

Are you in pain right now and in need of comfort? Maybe you have experienced loss and are grieving; or in great physical pain; or dealing with conflict in relationships; or having financial hardships.

Whatever you are walking through, I want you to know that God’s perfect comfort is available. There are words of comfort in the Bible for you.

Jesus is the great comforter and in your pain will console you when you ask it of him. He wants to embrace you and walk beside you, hand in hand. He wants to meet with you when the hurt feels excruciating and listen to your feelings to comfort you. Don’t look to anything else but him. Not food, social media, shopping, etc. Go to him. His presence is with you.

What Does the Bible Say About Comfort?

The Bible tells you that Jesus, as comforter, will get you through this hard time.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, ESV)

He is the “God of all comfort.” As he comforts you, you then can do the same for others. No matter what you are going through, there is nothing from which he can’t comfort you.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Who Is the Comforter in the Bible?

Specifically, the Holy Spirit is referred to as the “comforter” in the Bible—or “helper” in many translations.

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;” (John 14:16, KJV)

Remember that the Holy Spirit lives within you. Jesus hasn’t left you and will carry you through this trying time. He has given you his Spirit.

Stick close to him and pour your heart out to him. Let him hold your hand as you share your feelings—feel them, don’t stuff them down—knowing he will comfort you.

The discomfort will go away and the peace will come from his comfort. Don’t doubt it, even when the pain feels unbearable. His comfort is there and you will receive it.

How God Comforts Us

The Bible says that Jesus is a good shepherd who gave it all for you (John 10:11); who will comfort you no matter what you are walking through.

This is seen in Psalm 23: a Psalm you can hold on to and use for prayers for comfort in difficult times. It provides words of comfort and support so you can know that Jesus will lead you through this hard time; that he is with you. It is comfort in the Bible for death of a loved one, or whatever else you are walking through.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23, ESV)

He is a shepherd that will lead you well through this “valley of the shadow of death” and will comfort you with his “rod” and “staff.” The “rod” guarding you from harm and the “staff” leading you well.

You can rest peacefully because God has got you. You are safe with the Lord.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

This is what Paul was praying for the Thessalonians, and in your hardship you can do the same for yourself

Even in suffering, Paul knew God was furthering the kingdom. God will use your hardship for good, but in the meantime remember to pray for comfort. He will comfort you.
