5 Lies We Believe About God

5 Lies We Believe About God

Have you ever been lied to by a close family member or friend? You trusted them once, but afterward you just feel betrayed. Lies do this. They greatly impact our relationship with others. Distancing us from them, causing us great hurt and making us doubt their character and love.

Satan does this too, trying to undermine our relationship with God. There are many lies we believe about God that Satan has been telling us. He is the father of all lies and he uses this tactic to draw us away from God.

It’s so important that you recognize the lies the enemy tells us about God so you don’t believe them. God is always trustworthy. He would never lie to you about who he is. Trust him. Don’t let the enemy make you doubt who he is to you.

What to Say When the Devil Talks to You

The devil is a liar (John 8:44). He doesn’t want you to think God is trustworthy, but he is. The devil speaks to you, making you believe lies about yourself so you won’t be who God made you to be. He tells you lies that you can’t do what God is telling you to do. This cripples you.

Satan perpetuates thoughts in your mind that are negative and self destructive to you. He creates doubt in your mind, making you not believe what God can do for you. When you have an outrageous thought that is evil, that is from him. He wants you to keep those thoughts in your mind so that he can get you to act on them.

Therefore, you need to know what to say when the devil talks to you. You need to fight back and reject those thoughts from him. You need to take them captive and give them to God.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIV)

You need to then proclaim God’s truth in your mind to stand in that truth. The devil can’t stand against the truth of God. Remember Jesus’ fight with the devil in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11)

Proclaim the truth, stand in it, and don’t ever doubt the power of the word of God. That is what to say when the devil talks to you. He is not in control of your mind. You are in control. You have the choice to not allow those lies of the enemy to stay.

Lies vs Truth

How can you know what is a lie versus the truth of God? You have to remember God’s character and his heart for you. God loves you so much and would not say anything to you that will discourage you or hurt you. He speaks to you always with love.

If you hear something that goes against the word of God, that is a lie. God would never do that. God’s words encourage you, affirm you, build you up, they bring you peace and comfort; they do not lead you into confusion.

Sometimes you hear things from God that will challenge you to step out in faith. He wants to refine you, but again it will never go against his character and the Bible. Test what you hear against the word of God so you know it is true.

Lies the enemy tells you make you confused, hurt you, or cause fear, worry and anxiety. But Jesus has given you a helper, the Holy Spirit, to allow you to know the truth.

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.” (John 16:13, NIV)

Trust the power of the Holy Spirit to do this for you. Read the word of God daily so your mind is renewed in the truth of God. You don’t want to believe a lie rather than the truth. God is trustworthy and will never lie to you. He is who he says he is.

Lies We Believe About God

Lies Satan tells us draw us away from God. They make us doubt God can do miracles for us. They make us lack faith when we need it the most. They allow us to believe God isn’t who he says he is.

We need to recognize the lies we believe about God so we can take them captive and love God, following the greatest commandment (Matthew 22:37-39). Satan does not want us to do this because when we love God we can love ourselves and love people, too.

Below, you will find 5 lies we believe about God and a Bible verse with the truth to combat it. I am praying that you will walk in the great truth of who God is so you can draw closer to him.

1. God Doesn’t Love Me

One of the biggest lies we believe about God is that he doesn’t love us. But this is the furthest thing from the truth. God loves you so much.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” (1 John 3:1, NIV)

No matter what you have done, he loves you. No matter if you have walked away from him, he loves you. No matter what you say to him, he loves you.

There is absolutely nothing that can change his love for you. Never believe this lie that God doesn’t love you… he always loves you.

2. God Has Left Me

Sometimes it can feel like God has left us. That he is not with us anymore because our circumstances feel so difficult, and nothing is working out.

However, I am here to tell you that this is one of the lies about God we believe.

God is always with you, even at the worst. He never leaves you.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV)

He has gone before you and has never left you. He is working things out for your good. He will always be with you in whatever you are going through.

3. God Doesn’t Hear My Prayers

When you have been crying out to God for something for a long time in prayer, sometimes the enemy can make you question if God even hears you. The truth is that God always hears your prayers.

“In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” (Psalm 18:6, NIV)

He always hears your cries and answers your prayers in different ways. Sometimes he says yes, or wants you to wait, or maybe he says no because he has something better for you.

But he always hears your voice and in fact desires to hear from you all the time. Nothing is too big or small to bring to him in prayer. He hears it all.

The lies we believe about God can distance us from him and this one certainly does that by making us not want to pray anymore.

4. God Doesn’t Have Good Plans for Me

Sometimes we don’t see good things happening for us like they are for others and we believe the enemy’s lie that God doesn’t have good plans for us. But this is another lie about God.

What is God’s truth? God’s truth is that he always has good plans for you.

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV)

He will never harm you; he has the best life for you ahead. When things don’t seem to be looking that way, don’t believe the devil’s lies but instead believe God’s word in the Bible.

5. God Doesn’t Keep His Promises

God is a promise keeper. But often when we don’t see his promises happening, the enemy can make us think God doesn’t keep his promises… or at the very least they are not for us. But God always keeps his promises.

“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.” (Psalm 145:13, NIV)

He will do everything that he says in the Bible for you. Don’t stop trusting him and believing him. There are many tricks of the enemy to get you to not believe the truth about God. God will never lie to you, however. He is always trustworthy.

Prayer Against Lies of the Enemy

It’s important that when you recognize a lie you are believing about God that you reject it. If it’s a lie that you have been believing about God for a long time (that God has now revealed to you), you need to confess it and repent to God. Then you need to replace it with the truth from the Bible in order to renew your mind.

If you don’t know if you are believing lies about God, then ask him. You always want to be in the truth. Also, trust the Holy Spirit to bring you into truth. Pray, moving forward, that you would walk in the truth and that God would reveal the lies you are believing about him. Painful circumstances that we will walk through, and hurt from others, can cause us to believe lies about God.
